Interview with the author, the fantastic L.S. Darsic
Tell me about yourself.
am 33 years old, married and have 3 dogs. I am like a crazy cat lady, but with 3 large dogs. I have a Weimeriner, German Shorthair Pointer and a Doberman. My husband and I have been together for 10 years and married for 4 years. We live in Grand Rapids, MI. The city is big enough but not too big, I can drive 10 minutes and get into the country so that is a bonus in my opinion! I work full time at a skilled nursing facility in the finance department, so my job is to manage the billing staff who bill the residents. I love my job, helping families and residents to find ways to cover the cost of their care and still be taken care of makes me love my job. My company is wonderful and one of the few that I can say actually care about taking care of their residents. Ok, I will stop on my elderly care tangent now :)
How long have you been writing?
Not long. I used to write for fun when I was little and thought I could write something awesome, then I would get a few pages done and realize I was missing out on playing with my friends and give up. In October or November of last year I was telling my cousin how I had so many ideas for stories, she kept telling me I should do it. So in Feb. I did it, a month later I have my first book and it is live on Amazon.
What’s your story about?
My story is about a girl named Alex. She is 26 years old and is a Nephilim. She comes from a difficult family and upbringing. Her family isn't the best to her so you will learn about her struggles with that through the book. She is sent by her family to Scotland to meet with another Nephilim clan there. In Scotland she meets and falls for a guy named Finn. During the story you watch their relationship grow and you begin to see Alex change and stop having a pity party for herself cause her family isn't the best. There are some twists and turns in the book that I shouldn't spoil for the reader, but let's just say there is a bad guy in the book :)
What genre would you consider your book?
Mythology/Romance/Paranormal (I always struggle with this part because I feel it fits into many)
Give me some insight into your main character.
Alex is awkward, snarky, bitchy, whiny (that goes away eventually), pessamistic, lonely and is really just looking for her place in life. Her family being indifferent to her has really hurt her feelings so she isn't very confidant
What makes your book different from others in its genre?
I feel like I have read so many books where it is full of the typical....girl meets guy, girl has struggles with family/friend/guy...girl gets over it...bad guy comes in and guy saves girl. I tried very hard to keep my book from being the same story written over and over again. This book has twists in it that also helps keep it from being just the same story as all the others. I'm terrible at telling people that this book is so awesome, it will blow your pants off. I am a modest person and am looking for reviews to tell me if it blew their pants off or if I need to stop writing now :)
What inspired you to write your book?
I feel like Alex has a story to tell. I don't know what other writers do, but I never wrote out a story line. When I write my book I just write what my head makes up for Alex's story.
How did you come up with the title?
Unwanted Blood came to me as I was thinking of Alex's life. Her family seems to not want her and they are her blood.
What’s your favorite part of it, without giving anything away of course?
The last several chapters are my favorite. The book really starts out by laying the ground work so its a bit slow going. When we get towards the end everything changes and things go crazy. When I wrote those chapters my hands were literally sweating and my heart was beating fast.
Tell me about your writing process?
Ha, what process? I sit down and it just pours out of me. If I had to sit down and plan it or thing too hard about it I probably wouldn't be doing it :)
What do you find most difficult about writing?
I find nothing really difficult about the writing part, what I find difficult is AFTER the book is done. Promoting myself and my book is not my cup of tea. I hate acting like everything I do is rainbows and unicorns. I obviously like my own work but does it need improvements? I would say there are few that don't. I want the readers to tell me if its good or if it sucks, I don't want to be the one telling them these things.
Are you a full-time writer?
Nope, I am just doing this to get the story out of my head :)
What are your writing ambitions?
I have none really. Would I like to be famous, have my books made into movies? Who wouldn't? But I am a realist so my ambitions would be for my books to do well, for people to enjoy them and for me to keep writing them
What do you do when you get writer’s block?
Stare out a window? I haven't really encountered that yet. I am currently writing my 2nd book in the Unwanted Blood series and the other day I was just not coming up with good ideas for tools to torture someone with (hint for book 2) so I yell to my husband that I need some ideas. He is great at giving me ideas even when he hasn't read my book
Do you outline and plot your book as you’re writing or does it go where it goes?
Nope, I don't outline a thing. Right now I don't even know if Alex lives, dies or moves to another country in the book series. The story comes to me as I write it so I have no idea
What is your favorite book?
Pfft, I am sure you don't have the time to even read the list if I wrote them down. But to name a few....Game of Thrones (all the books which I will not even try to name) love the show which causes me to read all the books while I wait for new seasons. The Outlander books (I love all things Irish and Scottish for some reason)
Are there any new authors that have grabbed your interest?
T. Michelle Nelson :) I saw your post on facebook and then looked up your books. I have them on my "to buy" list for when I am done with my 2nd book. They sound interesting!
I am self published and I have no idea what I would have done differently cause I am still working through it all
What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Don't write if you ever feel like it is work. If I ever get to the point where I sigh deeply and have to trudge myself over to the computer to write then I will stop. I would also say that you better enjoy promoting yourself cause I think it sucks! ;)
If you could have dinner with any person dead or alive who would it be?
George RR Martin so I could tell him how the books and show should end ;)
When you aren’t writing, what do you do for fun?
Read, I read a lot. When I'm not working, writing or reading then I am spending time with my husband, dogs and family.
If you could say anything to your readers, what would it be?
Reviews please! If you bought my book please write a review! Good, bad or ugly, I don't care. I want to know if this is any good or if I should just toss my laptop out a window and call it a day!
1. What's your biggest fear?
Getting a hunch back from being slumped over my desk ALL day and then going home and slumping over my laptop writing my books. Or getting bed sores which in my case would be chair sores....they seem like they would be very painful
2. Who is the most annoying character you've ever encountered in a book, on tv or in a movie?
There are too many to list but I do hate King Joffery from Game of Thrones quite a bit (yes, I am a GOT nerd I guess)
3. If you were on death row, what would you choose for a final meal?
Everything my grandma makes. I love her food!
4. What is your biggest pet peeve?
Again, I have probably too many to list! My biggest is probably chick drama. Hate it.
5. If you knew you could get away with anything without consequence, what would you do?
Rig the lotto so I could be rich
6. What is your biggest regret in life?
Not telling my family and friends sooner about my writing
7. If you had Doctor Who's TARDIS, what time would you travel to?
Ok, now I know this is dumb BUT I am a Game of Thrones nerd but not a Dr. Who nerd (SO SORRY!!) So I'm not even sure how to answer that question
9. What is the best present you ever received?
I don't know if you would consider this a present but I do....sory for the long explanation in advance....when I started writing I told NO ONE. Not even my husband. I guess I felt like a dork or people would laugh at me for wanting to write a book. I didn't tell my husband till I was almost done with it and when I did tell him it was after I had several drinks. I was SO nervous. When I did tell him I didn't get laughed at like I thought. He has been 100% supportive. Then I told my cousin who I always talk books with, she was the same way and even read the book before I published it. Then the day I hit publish, I told my friends and my Mom. I thought for sure that I would get laughed at or someone tell me I was dumb. But everyone has been supportive. Since my book has come out all my family and friends have been nothing but encouraging and helpful to me. So to me, that is the best gift I have ever received. Every time my friends or family post something about my book or text me saying they liked it, I nearly cry. And trust me, I hardly ever cry.
10. What's your secret guilty pleasure movie you don't want to admit you love?
I'm not even sure I have one? I tend to only watch movies 1-2 times max. I guess I just like reading better. Give me a good book and I will read it 5-6 times
11. What is your most prized material possession?
Are dogs considered materials? If so then I would say my Doberman named Britta. Yes, I guess I play favorites but she is just the sweetest dog ever and I love her to pieces.
