So I'm watching television and this show keeps spouting off the phrase "unconditional love" so much it becomes somewhat vomit-inducing. Sure, we've all heard the term, but have we really thought about it? To begin let's think about what it really means.
Wikipedia describes it as "affection without any limitations." Urban Dictionary has the same basic definition - "To love somebody with no conditions or circumstances: to love completely." And here's where I'm about to play devil's advocate to anyone who thinks they have experienced a romantic unconditional love.
A love with no limits. A love that no condition may be placed upon to change the initial feeling. Hmmm. Okay. Let's put some conditions out there and see what happens. Is your love really unconditional? (I said that very sarcastically as I rolled my eyes.) This should be fun.
Let's take it even a step further... I'm about to dive into the morbid and twisted, but I'm proving a point. Let's say you believe you can still love your spouse no matter what they do, even the above listed atrocities. -- But what if they kill another beloved family member of yours? (Hey, I warned you I was going there.) So yeah, not so much unconditional love, is it?
I don't believe it's possible to have this type of feeling for anyone in a romantic sense. Maybe some people can, I can't. If someone does horrific things to hurt me or other people I love, I can't love them anymore, nor would I want to attempt to try it. There is one person that without a doubt I can say I feel this way for. One single individual who can kick my dog, kill anyone else on the planet (including me) and do anything without losing a place in my heart. That's right. Just one. And I feel like the luckiest person on earth to have him in my life.
And why am I explaining all this in my blog? Well, let's just say in the next couple Lily Drake books this idea will be confronted. Since Lily is my creation, she feels the same way about it as I do, of course. The men in her life may push her boundaries, but only one will always be the love of her life... her son.
